Women's Hoops falls in double overtime in Region semis
The No. 3 seed Scottsdale women's basketball team (19-9) battled through 50 minutes of intense action Wednesday night before falling to No. 2 seed Mesa, 87–73, in a double-overtime thriller in the NJCAA Region I Semifinals at Theo Heap Gym.
Scottsdale came out sharp in the opening quarter, setting the tone defensively and building a 23–12 lead after one. The Artichokes forced early turnovers and converted on the other end, highlighted by strong play from sophomore guard Mia Davis and forward Landin Kelley.
The momentum carried into the second quarter as Scottsdale stretched its advantage to as many as 16 points. The Artichokes would take a 40–29 lead into halftime.
The Thunderbirds steadily chipped away in the second half, capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and free throws. Despite Scottsdale maintaining control for much of the third quarter, Mesa closed the gap to 53–43 heading into the fourth.
The final frame featured multiple momentum swings. Scottsdale pushed ahead 62–59 with just over three minutes remaining, but Mesa responded with timely buckets to tie the game at 63–63 in the closing seconds. With no time left in regulation, Kelley delivered a clutch jumper to force overtime and keep the Artichokes alive.
The first overtime period was tightly contested, featuring five ties and relentless defensive stands from both sides. Saige Miller converted key free throws and a late layup to put Scottsdale up 71–69, but Mesa answered in the final seconds to send the game into a second overtime tied at 71–71.
In the second extra period, The Thunderbirds gained separation behind timely three-point shooting and consistent trips to the free throw line. Scottsdale continued to battle, but Mesa's late run proved decisive in the 87–73 final.
Landin Kelley led the Artichokes with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Mia Davis added 14 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists in an all-around performance. Saige Miller provided a spark off the bench with 15 points, helping Scottsdale tally 25 bench points on the night.
In postseason awards news, Mia Davis was named to the All-Region First Team, while Vanessa Sepulveda was named to the All-Region Second Team.
