Scottsdale drops narrow 3-2 decision in Region I opener

Scottsdale baseball fell 3-2 to Chandler-Gilbert in a tightly contested Game 1 of the NJCAA Region I best-of-three opening round series at SCC on Thursday.

The Artichokes (31-24) struck first, plating two runs in the fourth inning behind a two-RBI single from Brevin Matthews. Scottsdale held the lead into the middle innings as starter Dalton Hanson turned in a solid outing, allowing two runs over 6.0 innings while striking out six.

Chandler-Gilbert (31-26) chipped away late, scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to take the lead for good.

Scottsdale totaled seven hits on the day, with Matthews leading the way with two and both RBIs. Ryder Florence and Logan Spetz each added a run scored, while Carson Feddema, Gregory, and Reichert contributed hits.

Andrew Filimoehala (6-5) took the loss in relief, allowing one run over 3.0 innings.

The Artichokes will look to even the series in Game 2 tomorrow at SCC. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
