Scottsdale falls to Chandler-Gilbert, season ends in Region I playoffs

No. 2 seed Scottsdale's season ended with an 11–3 loss to No. 3 seed Chandler-Gilbert in the NJCAA Region I playoffs at SCC, as the Coyotes completed a 2–0 sweep in the best-of-three opening round series.

The game was tight early, with Chandler-Gilbert (32-26) holding a 2–0 lead through four innings. The Coyotes erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning to build a 10–0 lead. Scottsdale answered with three runs in the bottom half, but Chandler-Gilbert tacked on another run in the seventh to end the game via the mercy rule.

Scottsdale (31-25) finished with seven hits, led by Brevin Matthews (2-for-3) and Dylan Frank (2-for-4, two RBIs). Luke Calendo added an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Braden Burness (4-7) started and took the loss. He tossed 4.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits. He fanned five, but walked six. All total, SCC pitching issued 13 free passes.

Chandler-Gilbert will now advance to face No. 1 seed South Mountain for the Region I Championship. That best-of-three series will be at SMCC May 7-9.
